  5. This is the first release of the ImageFX 2.x Studio driver.  Note:
  6. This  driver is not made by your ImageFX manufacturer Nova Design.

  18. Introduction:
  19. -------------
  20.  
  21. This  ImageFX  Studio  printer  module  allows  printing using the
  22. Studio or CanonStudio print program.  Studio and CanonStudio offer
  23. printing  24  bit  to a Workbench driver using a color management.
  24. Using  the  Studio  color  management  you  can  adjust all output
  25. colors.  The software also adds a spooling and many other printing
  26. functions  to  ImageFX.   It  offers a much better output than the
  27. SuperPrefs printer module shipped with ImageFX.

  29. Please  note  that  the  Studio  printer  module  includes a print
  30. spooler.   So you can continue working with ImageFX within seconds
  31. after  starting  the  print.  Printing is done in background.  You
  32. can even have several print jobs running at the same time.

  34. Requirements:
  35. -------------

  37.  + ImageFX 2.x (the driver was tested with the latest V2.6
  38.    version but should work fine with older ImageFX versions)
  39.  + Studio 2.12 (or higher) or registered CanonStudio
  40.    (all Studio explanations below also apply to CanonStudio).
  41.    Note: this update archive includes a Studio V2.11->V2.12 and
  42.    CanonStudio V2.xx->V2.12 patch.
  43.    A list of all Studio distributors are listed at the end.
  44.  + an additional 1-2 MBytes RAM for the Studio printing program.
  45.  + free disk space for the included spooler.

  48. Installation:
  49. -------------
  50.  
  51. - Click on the install icon using the Workbench.
  52.  
  53. - Follow the installation guides given by the install program.
  54.   The installation program will first update your printing
  55.   program. It will than search for a possible ImageFX or
  56.   ImageFX2 assign and install the printer module accordingly.
  57.  
  58. - After succesfully installing the ImageFX Studio printer module,
  59.   start ImageFX.
  60.  
  61. - Select the printer panel. Than select the Studio printer module.
  62.  
  63. - Enter a path to the spool drawer in the shown "Temp. Direct."
  64.   string gadget. The spool drawer is used by the module to save
  65.   images intended for print. Because of this, there should be
  66.   enough disk space left for saving 3-5 very large images in this
  67.   drawer.

  69. - In order to safe your spool drawer permanently, select the
  70.   "Prefs" panel and save your settings.
  71.  
  72. - Now you have done the basic setup. Click on "Print" in order
  73.   to print an image from ImageFX using the Studio or CanonStudio
  74.   printing program.

  76. The Basics
  77. ----------

  79. So  how  does  the ImageFX Studio printer module work?  The module
  80. will  act  as  a  link  between  the  Studio  printing program and
  81. ImageFX.   The  Studio  printing  program  can  print images to
  82. basicly  any  Workbench  driver in 24 bit precission.  Studio also
  83. offers   custom   drivers  wich  are  not  limited  by  the  Amiga
  84. printer.device.
  85.  
  86. When  selecting  "Print" in the ImageFX printer panel, the current
  87. image  is  safed  by ImageFX in the specified temporary directory.
  88. The  image  file is than forwarded to the Studio printing program.
  89. The  print program will show it's known user interface and you can
  90. select  the  wanted print settings.  Once you click on the "Print"
  91. gadget  in  Studio,  the  image  will  be printed.  The control is
  92. immeaditly  returned  to  ImageFX  after  clicking  on the "Print"
  93. gadget.   So you can continue working with ImageFX while Studio is
  94. printing  in background.  You can even issue more print jobs while
  95. printing takes place. You don't have to wait for your printer
  96. anymore.

  98. Setting up the ImageFX printer module is easy.  But what about the
  99. Studio settings?  The print settings in the Studio program reflect
  100. the  default  settings  for  your  printer  after  installing  the
  101. program.   If  you  want  your personal settings get used, use the
  102. Settings/Open menu item to load your default Studio.prefs settings
  103. file.

  105. The  ImageFX Studio printer module accesses the Studio/CanonStudio
  106. printing  program using the Studio server interface.  All settings
  107. made  withing  the Studio user interface after clicking on ImageFX
  108. "Print"    gadget   are   safed   in   a   settings   file   named
  109. "PageStreamStudioPrt.prefs"  in  the Studio_Prefs drawer.  So your
  110. usual  Studio  settings  safed  in Studio.prefs are not altered by
  111. your  ImageFX  adjustments.   This  way  you can have to different
  112. adjustments  without having to switch manually.  For instance, you
  113. can  usualy  print  images  to  an expensive dye sub printer using
  114. Studio.   But when printing using PageStream, you can setup Studio
  115. to print to another printer wich fits your DTP needs better.

  117. If  you  want  to  use your usual Studio settings with the ImageFX
  118. module,  use  the  Studio  Settings/Open  menu  item  to load your
  119. default settings in the Studio.prefs file.

  123. The ARexx Commands
  124. ------------------

  126. The Studio module supports ARexx commands similar to other ImageFX
  127. modules. Following commands are supported:
  128.  
  129. PRINT
  130.  
  131. This starts the print process. The image loaded in ImageFX will be
  132. safed and forwarded to Studio. The standard Studio user interface
  133. will show up for the user. In case the user "Cancel"s the print, 2
  134. is  returned  in rc by the command.  On an error, 1 is returned in
  135. rc. 0 is returned in case no error appeared.

  137. PRINT QUIET
  138.  
  139. Same  as  Print,  but the Studio user interface will not be shown.
  140. Instead the print is started using the default Studio settings for
  141. ImageFX.
  142.  
  143. TEMPDIR 
  144. TEMPDIR <drawerpath>
  145.  
  146. Use  this  command  to define the spool drawer used by the printer
  147. module  or  to  get  the  current spool drawer of the module.  The
  148. previous  setting  of  the spool drawer is returned in "result" by
  149. the command.  No error is returned in rc.

  151. VERSION
  152.  
  153. Returns  the  version  of  the  module's  ARexx  interface  in
  154. result. Currently this is 1.

  158. Problems & Fixes:
  159. -----------------
  160.  
  161. There are many things that can go wrong when it comes to printing.
  162. You also might get confused by some things happening when printing
  163. using the Studio printer module.  This section describes things to
  164. note:
  165.  
  166. - The "Print Server" can't get started or you don't get a response?
  167.  
  168. The Studio module needs to know where to find your Studio printing
  169. program  in  order  to  start  it.   The path and filename of your
  170. Studio  printing  program  is  stored  at installation time in the
  171. STUDIOPATH environment variable in ENV:  and ENVARC:.  The ImageFX
  172. module  will  be  unable  to  locate  the printing program, if you
  173. remove   the  environment  var  or  change  the  path/filename  of
  174. Studio/CanonStudio.
  175.  
  176. If you change things, you can update the STUDIOPATH enviroment var
  177. by "hand" or by installing this update again.  The install program
  178. will make sure STUDIOPATH is defined correctly.
  179.  
  180. Another  reason  might  be  lack  of  memory,  either fast or chip
  181. memory.   Both, Studio and ImageFX, have to be running on the same
  182. screen  at  the  same  time.   If you don't have enough memory for
  183. doing so, forget using this module (or better, get more memory).

  185. - Your system crashes after selectint "Print"
  186.  
  187. While this never happened during the testing of the driver, I just
  188. want  to  make  sure you know this shouldn't happen if both Studio
  189. and  ImageFX  have  enough  stack.   Usualy the default stack size
  190. given  is  enough.   You  can  increase  the  stack size using the
  191. Workbench Tool/Information menu item in case you do get a crash.
